Getting To Graduation Kit

Parents play an important role in helping their students get into college. Once there, college administrators tend to stress that students should be left to navigate the college environment largely on their own in order to develop independence. This expectation might have been reasonable 25 or 30 years ago, but the 4-year college graduate rate of 19% to 39% tells us that today's college students need a bridge between their parents' assistance and independent navigation in order to have the best chance of getting to graduation. Because most college students fail or drop out of college within the first 3 semesters, the earlier college-bound students can learn skills related to college success, the better.

I created the GETTING TO GRADUATION personal billboard to deliver 6 key research-based strategies that are shown to be associated with college graduation to serve as a bridge between parental assistance and independent college navigation. Parents and students can practice these strategies any time between 11th grade and the first 3 semesters of college to maximize success in the first three semesters of college - the time when most students either fail or drop out of college.

The 6 X 4 inch color 2-sided postcard presents 6 strategies contained in 4 squares. Each square is the equivalent of a one-hour educational coaching session – for a total of 4 hours. The 1.5 inch soft enamel lapel pin offers one-word reminders of the 6 strategies. (See pictures below).

Keep the postcard handy as a reminder of the strategies to help with practicing the strategies. Place the postcard on your refrigerator, mirrors, on the edges of the screen of your desktop monitor, laminate it and use it as a mouse or tape it to the cover of your laptop computer, or keep it in your school bag. Place the lapel pin on your jacket, school bag, hat, lab coat, or anywhere else that promotes constant reminder.
